hi all
Right it has been a while - busy photographing tree carvings and not enough time to post them - but that will change. Going to upload more photos soon. New WW2 photos from the Marlborough Downs, some photos from Swindon from the Young Archaeologists Club and more from Salisbury Plain taken by the Bulford Conservation Group... This one is from the Marlborough Downs - there is very little evidence of US training prior to D-day on the Downs - this tree carving is a great example though. 1943 July. Mac from Spokane, Wa (Washington State) Chris Gerrard in his lecture at Salisbury Museum mentioned some earlier Second World War tree carvings near Clarendon Palace, Salisbury. We went up the other Sunday and found a number of arborglyphs dating to 1942 and even earlier - possibly 1914/18.
Chantel Summerfield has a great article in the CBA British Archaeology - and this website and project is referenced!!! The article is a great read and highlights some of the follow up research finding the people who made these carvings....
Couple of nice US arborglyphs from Rockley near Marlborough - the Americans were all over the county during the Second World War. /rockley.html
Next plan for the website is to create a distribution map of US carvings - might take a while as pretty busy at the moment The Bulford Conservation Group have organised a recording morning at Dumbell Copse, bulford.
When: Sunday November 11th. 10.00-12-00 Where: Dumbell Copse. Meet at SU 4620 1790 What is it: Surveying and recording arborglyphs (tree graffiti) made by soldiers and civilians. Please bring a camera and a GPS if you have them. Directions: Access to site from Bulford village- up Milston Road then onto Milston Drove. Park at meeting place. Thanks Sharon for sending the photo in of a tree carving with the date 1940 and the name EDNA
The website is to be launched at the WANHS AFG social and AGM on Friday 12th October
Just setting up the website - looking good so far
