We have found a number of arborglyphs dating to the Second World War
These include UK and Commonwealth troops and US soldiers training in Wiltshire or serving on airfields.
Sometimes quite elaborate artwork is carved in the tree. Arborglyph dated Sept 12th 1944 found in Polo Wood, Salisbury Plain
US arborglyphs can be recognised by how the date is written -06/27/44 is 27th June 1944. Often the names are very different to the traditional British names of the period.
American arborglyph found at Ramsbury airfield - used by the US. As well as various names - Buck, Butch etc....there is a Stars and Stripes flag
The "Chindits" operated behind enemy lines in North Burma between 1943-4 against the Japanese. However, we are not sure whether this tree carving was made after this campaign.
