What is the aim of the project?
We are recording tree carvings in Wiltshire - measuring and taking photographs of them - and all the information is being carefully saved for the future. We hope to highlight the wealth of local tree carvings, identify the different types and find out some of the stories behind them - who wrote them and why? We would also like to promote the importance of this type of heritage and try and protect some of the most interesting carvings.
How can you join in?
Anyone is welcome to join in - we have provided some basic guidance to record the arborglyphs - recording the location, dimensions and content - and there is a spreadsheet that can be downloaded to record all this information.
We have set up a dropbox account to store the spreadsheets of arborglyph information and the photographs. Please contact us and we can set up access to this. Interesting photos can be uploaded to the website.
Accessing land
Often the tree carvings can be seen from footpaths. However, always ask permission from landowners before accessing private land to record arborglyphs.
