Yatesbury
Yatesbury was first established as a Royal Flying Corps airfield in late 1916. It closed in 1919 and was reopened in 1935/6 as a training airfield. It was used during the Second World War and a large Radio School was also established. This finally closed in 1965.
A number of tree carvings have been found so far - however the majority of early ones do not seem to be associated with the village's military presence. A number of tree carvings dating to the 1920s and early 1930s have been found - it may be that these were carved by local villagers. During this period the land wasn't owned by the War Office which may have enabled villagers to carve their names in these trees.
There are later ones from the 1950s and 60s which may be associated to military personnel training at the airfield. More work is needed as only a few areas have been investigated.
